New Chair to drive progress towards Nature-Positive future
TRAFFIC is delighted to announce that Justin Mundy has been appointed as Chair of the Board of Trustees, bringing extensive experience of leadership within the sustainability and financial sectors.
Mundy is currently the Chairman of SLM Partners, the Chairman of the Sustainability-linked Sovereign Debt Hub and is the Special Envoy of the Commonwealth Secretary General.
He has a number of advisory roles in the private sector, is a trustee of Global Canopy and is on the advisory boards of several other national and international conservation and development NGOs.
From 2007-2018, he was the Director of HRH (the then) Prince of Wales’ International Sustainability Unit, which helped facilitate consensus on how to resolve some of the key environmental challenges facing the world –including deforestation, sustaining the marine environment and ways to maintain ecosystem resilience while achieving development goals. Prior to that, he worked as an Adviser to the UK Government on Russia, Energy and Climate Change, and ran the World Bank’s forestry and biodiversity programmes in Russia and Central Asia.
Following a rigorous recruitment process, Mundy will take up the reins on 1 August 2024.
I have known TRAFFIC for many years and have long admired what it has achieved. Its work is more important than ever, as the twin challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss exert increasing pressure on species’ survival. I am excited to be working with such a talented Board to help TRAFFIC accelerate delivery of its 2030 strategy and ensure that trade in wild species is legal and sustainable, for the benefit of people and the planet.”

Executive Director Richard Scobey added: “Justin brings exceptional experience from the public, private and NGO sectors, and understands the hard realities of conservation in complicated places. We are thrilled to have a Board Chair with such a deep commitment to addressing illegal wildlife trade and a long track record of trusted convening across stakeholders to find solutions and drive change.”
Mundy takes over from Mark Halle, who has served as Chair of the Board for the past seven years and guided the evolution of TRAFFIC as a strong independent organization with close links to its founding members of IUCN and WWF. “Mark has brought an intellectual rigor, passion for conservation, and challenge of the status quo that has made TRAFFIC a stronger and more impactful organization,” said Scobey. ”We are hugely grateful for his leadership, vision, and friendship over the past years and look forward to continued collaboration to achieve a nature-positive future.”
